Napier

Holiday NZ Ad

Napier is known as The Art Deco City due in part to the massive reconstruction since the earthquake of 1931 which almost completely destroyed the City. The rapid rebuilding process was influenced by the art of the time and has been lovingly maintained to the same standards today. The historical Marine Parade and surrounds contains some stunning architecture within perhaps the largest collection of the some of the best heritage buildings in the country. Beautiful gardens and waterfalls are also a feature of the area with both providing the perfect backdrop to the winery region behind.

Take in the sights of the District and discover the many different styles and flavours on offer at a huge selection of vineyards on a wine tour. Many places refer to themselves as destination wineries combining a tasting with lunch at one of the vineyard restaurants or a picnic in the landscaped grounds and incorporating an architecture appreciation tour or a look through a small museum . You can even wind your way through the vineyards on a bike tour. Self guided tours are easy with the help of a leaflet from the information centre. Explore New Zealand’s only Winery Museum within the walls of old wine fermentation tanks. Marvel in the process of winemaking and get up close and personal with the tools of the trade. Tour the Tom McDonald cellar- visit and enjoy a tasting at New Zealand’s oldest winery.

Walk around the centre of town for an architectural tour. You only need to walk down about half a dozen streets to see the best of the Art Deco buildings on show. Visit the Art Deco Shop before you head off for maps and information.

Marine Parade, is a 2km long boulevard lined with Norfolk pines and follows a British seaside theme. It has a string of popular walkways and cycle tracks which link a variety of attractions.

The Ocean Spa is the biggest attraction, a lavish salty-chlorinated hot pool complex overlooking the grey shingly beach. Here you’ll find bubbles, jets, massages, beauty treatments and a lap pool.

Further South and you pass the Tom Parker fountain and the magnificent bronze cast of Pania of the reef. Opposite Pania of the Reef is the Hawkes Bay Museum which includes a well chosen collection of memorabilia- both Maori and Colonial.

Other great attractions include Opossum World, a popular outdoor rollerblading/skating rink and Marineland, a small marine zoo that houses a leopard seal, sea lions and penguins.

Napier has a great selection of dining options. From sipping a cappuccino on Marine Parade overlooking the glistening water’s of the Bay to dining out at an historic restaurant around the town centre, the options are endless. Ahuriri is around the northeastern side of Bluff Hill and is the perfect spot for lunch at one of the trendy restaurants or cool spacious bars. There are so many things to do in Napier, you will not be lost for choice.
